CPAP, APAP, and bilevel explained

Three approaches to positive airway pressure, selected for your needs.

What PAP means

Positive airway pressure delivers air through a mask to support breathing during sleep. The device type and settings are part of your prescription.

The main differences

  • CPAP delivers a fixed prescribed pressure.
  • APAP adjusts pressure automatically within a prescribed range.
  • Bilevel, also called BPAP or BiPAP, provides different pressures for breathing in and breathing out.

Which one is right for me?

That depends on your diagnosis, response to treatment, and other health needs. Bilevel is not simply an upgrade for everyone. Ask your clinician why your therapy was selected and what to do if it feels uncomfortable.
